Lions to hire James Harris as personnel executive

The Lions are close to hiring James Harris as a personnel executive.  No announcement is expected until after Super Bowl weekend is complete.
Harris was most recently the vice president of player personnel for Jacksonville. He worked for Baltimore before that. New Lions coach Jim Schwartz also once worked for the Ravens.
Here’s a link to an [...]

Former Lion, NFLPA President John Gordy dies at 73

John Gordy, a former offensive lineman for the Detroit Lions and former President of the NFLPA has passed away at age 73.

Detroit selected John in the second round of the 1957 NFL draft.  Gordy started as a rookie and was instrumental in helping the Lions win the NFL championship, the last time Detroit won [...]

Franchise & Transition Tags Analysis

The official 2009 Franchise and Transition Tag tender numbers are now available.
To refresh how tenders are established, a Franchise tender is an amount equal to the average of the top five salaries (salary plus other prorated amounts) at that position from the 2008 season. A Transition tender is an amount equal to the average of [...]

Detroit’s quarterback situation

Lions offensive coordinator Scott Linehan has said that Culpepper is not necessarily the Lions starter and that there will be open competition between him, Stanton, Kitna and possibly Henson for the starting gig.  from this it sounds like they’re going to let Orlovsky walk in free agency and aren’t necessarily going to take a quarterback [...]

WR Mike Furrey to be released

The Detroit Lions on Wednesday told WR Mike Furrey that he will be release on Feb 9th.  Apparently other players are also in the process of being informed they will be let go as well .
Furrey came to Detroit in 2006 after finishing the 2005 season with the St. Louis Rams as a free [...]

Matt Millen’s Memo to NBC: How To Fix the Super Bowl

Hahahahaha.  Finally someone writing satire that has a majority of truth to how things really are.
Every time I see the “destroyer of Detroit football” on the TV or hear about Matt “I don’t know anything about management” Millen returning to the broadcast booth or how Mr. “let’s draft another WR” is such a good broadcaster [...]

Agent for Cardinals’ Warner says client will shop around

Arizona Cardinals quarterback, Kurt Warner, will probably test the free agent market after the Super Bowl.  I believe he would be a much better choice than keeping either Kitna or, most definitely, Culpepper.  I’m not to high on either QB at the top of this years draft class but if the Lions take Stafford or [...]

Lions hire Matt Burke as LB coach

The Detroit Lions have hired former Titans defensive assistant/quality control coach Matt Burke to be their new Linebackers coach.

Burke, 32, worked under Schwartz in Nashville and fits in well with his new boss’ smart mentality. Burke played at Dartmouth and worked at Boston College and Harvard before he joined Jeff Fisher’s staff.

2006-08: Defensive Assistant/Quality [...]

Re-Building – The Offense

The Lions, for the most part, were able to put up points this past season.  One of the myriad of reasons they did not consistently was because of the play at the QB position.  The Culpepper hiring seemed to be a knee-jerk reaction to the continuous loses.  Orlovsky played OK at times but I don’t [...]

Scott Linehan named offensive coordinator

Wow.  Take a beautiful afternoon off to play golf and all sorts of stuff happens.   The Detroit Lions today named former St. Louis Rams coach Scott Linehan as offensive coordinator.
Linehan has an excellent background working in all aspects of the offense.  Here’s his prior coaching history.
1989-90 University of Idaho (Wide receivers coach)
1991 UNLV (Quarterbacks [...]

Offensive Coordinator update

What kind of offensive coordinator is Jim Schwarts looking for?
“The philosophy’s gonna be ours,” Schwartz said. “We’re not going to count on that guy to bring the philosophy. I think personality is going to be important, experience is going to be important — those kind of things.
“What I’m saying is, we’re not looking to hire [...]

Vegas lays odds for 2010 Super Bowl

Las Vegas bookmakers have released the odds for the 2010 Super Bowl.  The Lions are in last place at 150-1.  The next closest are the Rams, Chiefs and Raiders at 100-1.  Patriots are in the lead at 6-1.  Get your bets down now!

Kiper’s Big Board

Mel Kiper has come out with his “Big Board” for the 2009 NFL draft.  He has the Lions taking QB Matt Stafford with the #1 pick and LB Rey Maualuga with the #20 pick.
I know Detroit needs help in the QB area but I personally don’t think Stafford is the answer.  I’d rather they take [...]

Shane Dronett dead at 38.

Shane Dronett, who was 38 years old, played 10 years in the NFL and started every game for the Atlanta Falcons’ 1998 Super Bowl team.  Dronett was found dead at his home Wednesday in Atlanta.  Shane was a defensive tackle and played for the Detroit Lions in 1996.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to his [...]

The search for an O-Coord

Former Broncos wide receivers coach Jedd Fisch is officially off the market.  The Lions interviewed Fisch on Monday and he has, since then, accepted a multi-year deal to become the offensive coordinator at the University of Minnesota.
It looks like Brian Schottenheimer is still the front runner for the o-coord spot but he may end up [...]

Gunther Cunningham new defensive coordinator

Jim Schwartz has made his first staff choice today and has hired former Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham.  No terms have been released on his contract.
If Cunningham has the talent to work with he has, in the past, been able to field a formidable defense.  If his recent record is taken into account, [...]

More on the coaching search

The Kansas City Cheifs have supposedly  refused permission for the Lions the opportunity to interview Gunther Cunningham for D-Coord.  Can’t say that I’m upset.  I’m not a big fan.  He was good for a while but his D’s haven’t done much the last several years.  Maybe with a better cast of players under him, he [...]

President Obama

President Obama roots for the NFC North, too bad it’s the Bears.
Congratulations, Mr. President, on your election to the highest post in the world.  Don’t screw it up like King George did.

Packers hire Capers, Peppers staying put?

The Green Bay Packers hired Dom Capers as their new defensive coordinator.  The former head coach and defensive coordinator in the league is used to running the 3-4 defense and has some experience with the 4-3.  We’ll see if this makes a difference in a poor division like the NFC North.
Julius Peppers may not make [...]

Re-building – The Defense

Dismal season, 2008.  0 and 16.  No one would have thought that would be possible, even with Matt “I still don’t know crap about management” Millen in charge.  The Lions could have won at least 5 of those games.  Stupid penalties, extremely poor officiating and a lack of talent were just a few of the [...]
