Who and why? (especially why?)

There are a lot of polls out there now on who the Lions should take at 1-1.  A lot of the comments I see around are ‘don’t take Stafford’ or ‘a QB at 1-1 is a must’ or ‘we have to draft an offensive tackle’.  There are some good conversations but no one has really sold me on any one player not named Curry.

Well, below is my poll.  I’d like you to select your choice but also tell us why.  Make an argument for your choice and convince everyone that there is no other option except the guy you say should go 1-1.  I’m interested in hearing why people want who they want.

I, of course, have selected Aaron Curry.  I believe that that he is the real deal and will be both a playmaker and game-changer on the defensive side of the ball.  He is big, mean and fast and is a dedicated individual that loves to play football.  He is, as a lot of people say, the safest pick in the draft.  I also believe that he is the right person for the Lions to take at 1-1.

With the 1st pick in the 2009 draft, the Detroit Lions select:

  • Aaron Curry (46%, 18 Votes)
  • Jason Smith (23%, 9 Votes)
  • Matthew Stafford (21%, 8 Votes)
  • B.J. Raji (8%, 3 Votes)
  • Eugene Monroe (3%, 1 Votes)
  • Andre Smith (0%, 0 Votes)
  • Brian Orakpo (0%, 0 Votes)
  • Mark Sanchez (0%, 0 Votes)
  • Someone else (-1%, 0 Votes)

Total Voters: 39

Without a doubt, Aaron Curry. While I wouldn’t be mad if they took a tackle, I agree with you that Curry is the safest pick in the draft and that’s exactly what the Lions need right now. The last thing we need is another 1st round bust. Drafting Curry will give us one hell of a LB core and something to build the defense around. Please please PLEASE draft Curry.

I agree. They can snag DT and OT in later rounds, especially if they can trade 1-20 and pick up a few more picks. With Curry, they’d have one of the of not the best LB corps in the NFL.

I just don’t think they need to take a QB this year or trade for Cutler as he’d probably cost way too much. besides, he’s a whiney ass and you need thick skin to play that position in Detroit.

I see a few votes for Stafford, Smith and Raji. I really like Raji but believe Curry is still the better choice.

Left tackles are hard to come by, and it’s the most important position when protecting a right handed QB (blind side). Great LTs in free agency are non-existent because teams know of their importance and scarcity. They must be acquired through the draft, and the Lions have the opportunity to pick up a very good one. Plus, they can get a linebacker at 1-20.
