Offensive draft options at 1-1 and the week in review

Ok, I’ve discussed what I’d like to see happen if the Lions take Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford at 1-1.  What are the other options if the Lions don’t think he’s the real deal or can’t get him signed before the draft?  Excellent offensive left tackles are a hot commodity and difficult to come by any other way beside through the draft or via trade.  The Lions have a need for a LT or, they can keep Backus in that spot and select a LG instead.  I think that Backus would be a decent player at that position if they can shore up that guard spot.  Let’s look at who’s available for the LT position.

The two top OT’s in the draft are Jason Smith, Baylor and Eugene Monroe, Virginia.  Most of the Lions fans who support taking an OT seem to prefer Smith over Monroe.  I believe that Monroe will have the most immediate impact and be able help right away, as he is better in the run game, but Smith has the potential to be the better player.

Another option is to trade for the Bills Jason Peters.  He’s not happy in Buffalo and they are unlikely to keep him.  I could see something happening there on draft day.

  • Mark Sanchez is supposed to visit the Lions this coming Thursday. Could all the Stafford talk be nothing but smoke and mirrors and are the Lions considering Sanchez at 1-1?  Highly unlikely.  More likely would be they think he could be there at 1-20 or they may trade up and get him.  I’d rather have the picks he’d cost to trade up.
  • Lions WR Bryant Johnson thinks the Lions will have a potent air attack this season.

It’s going to do a lot of good things, not just for my game but for the team as well,” Bryant Johnson said. “He’s going to draw double coverage, which means I may get singled-up a lot. I can use my ability on the back side to beat one-on-one coverage and kind of balance out the defense.

I think it would be much better with someone else besides Culpepper throwing to them.

  • The NFL has invited nine players to attend the draft in NYC.

The list includes three tackles (Baylor’s Jason Smith, Virginia’s Eugene Monroe and Mississippi’s Michael Oher), two quarterbacks (Georgia’s Matthew Stafford and Kansas State’s Josh Freeman), two linebackers (Wake Forest’s Aaron Curry and Southern Cal’s Brian Cushing), Texas Tech wide receiver Michael Crabtree and Texas defensive end Brian Orakpo.

Does the NFL know something no one else does?  Maybe the Lions aren’t considering Sanchez at 1-1 after all.   I am surprised that Freeman is on the list.  There’s no way he goes in the top ten and could be around for a while and probably will be the last one on the list taken.

    RE:Sanchez at the Draft

Mark Sanchez has decided to watch the draft some place other than New York, short-circuiting any sort of precipitous fall down the draft board, while sitting under the hot lights of the New Yawk studios and having cameras recording every eye blink and drop of sweat, while he sits in the “green room”.

I hadn’t heard that. If I knew I wasn’t going to be a top ten choice, I would not be there either. The Rodgers and Quinn drafts were bad for them, especially when that’s all ESPN could talk about during the draft and would show them every few minutes.
